Posted - 01/07/2006 : 07:37:31 I'm an absolute newby. Checked thru the forum and FAQ and did not find a solution.
The X50v hangs when; I select an object and then goto the info page. The image loads partially and hangs.
A soft reset will restore the PPC but try the same function again and it hangs again.
Could this be a problem with my ppc setup. The program is loaded into the external memory card together with all the related files.
Thank you for any advice. |

Posted - 01/12/2006 : 23:00:24 No, I have not updated the rom as it has been working fine until now.
Perhaps I will update to see if it will solve the problem. Report when I'm done.

Posted - 01/12/2006 : 12:25:16 I googled briefly on this topic and found a bunch of references to similar problems with other applications and the X50v. For example:
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/showthread.php?t=99440&highlight=landscape+x50v
http://www.aximsite.com/boards/archive/index.php/t-97000.html
I'm curious if you have this x50v upgrade installed (not advising you to, but just curious):
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R106214&SystemID=PDA_AXIM_X50&os=PPCA&osl=en&deviceid=7464&devlib=0&typecnt=1&vercnt=4&formatcnt=1&fileid=137112
Can anybody offer any other anecdotes of whether this problem exists on their X50v?

Posted - 01/11/2006 : 01:18:35 <Q1> Using WM 2003 SE Ver. 4.21.1088 (build 14260.2.0.5) <Q2> installed latest Pocket Stars download (unregistered)Ver.5.1.2
Removed the .mes file and in selecting info. on Messier object, top part of image opens and PPC hangs. soft reset
in selecting planetary object, it attempts and loads top part of image, then hangs. Soft Reset:
Copied .mes file into same folder of Nomad Electronics Pocket Stars. Repeat info command with same results.
Hard Reset:
Demo version again valid for 15 days. Repeat all the above with same results.
All other functions work OK.
Seems that with or without the .mes file, the results are the same. Only part of the image is loaded and then hang.
What is strange is that without the .mes file, a part image is loaded before hang up.
I am doing this whilst reporting.....A thought occurred and I changed from Landscape mode to portrait ! IT WORKS ONLY IN PORTRAIT MODE !!!!!
Landscape mode hangs when selecting info. What a relief
Thanks. now to resolve my registration issue with Handango.

Posted - 01/10/2006 : 19:31:43 Q1. Are you running WM5 or WM2003? Also, exactly which version (Start.Settings.System.About)?
Q2. Exactly which version of Pocket Stars are you running?
I would be fairly surprised if there was a clash with installed software. Pocket Stars doesn't install any shared DLLs, and is completely self-contained. Unless another application is hooking the operating system at a low level (say to change system colors), then it shouldn't interfere.
The only thing unique about bringing up the Info page is that it attempts to load "PocketStars.mes" which contains the Messier and Caldwell images. If this file were somehow corrupted (say by an aborted download?), I suppose it could possibly trigger the symptoms you're seeing. The easiest way to test this theory is just to delete the file completely from the directory in which Pocket Stars is installed.

Posted - 01/08/2006 : 23:12:56 Hi Jay,
Thanks for your reply and advice.
Is it possible that others may not have explored the info features ;)
I have done as your said, removed program and reinstalled. Still the same problem.
There is more than 10MB of memory for program and another 10MB for storage.
I have tried installing as default as well as in the 1 Gb SD external memory with same results of, hangup when I use the info. feature.
Can there be a clash of installed software? Installed and running is Omega one Battery Pack Pro. Others installed but not running is Holux GPS viewer and H&H chinese english dictionary.
Any ideas ? The graphics load partially and then X50v hangs.
Thanks
Tuckfook.

Posted - 01/08/2006 : 21:03:24 Since this isn't a known, reported bug by others, I'm going to assume it is somehow a problem with your installation. First check the available memory (Start.Settings.System.Memory) and verify that you have at least a couple of MB of free memory.
If this isn't the problem, it's possible that the program was corrupted, either during download or during installation on your memory card. Try uninstalling and then reinstalling.
See the following note if you're running WM5.
Unlike all previous versions of the Pocket PC Operating System, WM5 automatically attempts to un-install the old version of an application during an upgrade. While this is fine in theory, in practice, for yet unknown reasons this de-installation step sometimes fails. Not just with Pocket Stars but with many other applications as well. If the de-installation step fails, then the installation aborts with an error. Then the application is in limbo, unable to either install or uninstall. If you experience this problem, follow these steps to convince WM5 that the application is not installed:
1. Exit Pocket Stars (Menu.Help.About.Quit)
2. Attempt to manually uninstall Pocket Stars (Start.Settings.System.RemovePrograms Nomad Electronics Pocket Stars).
3. If an error occurs, answer “Yes, remove from list of installed programs”.
4. From your desktop: ActiveSync.Explore.MobileDevice then delete the directory “\Program Files\Pocket Stars” on your Pocket PC.
5. Perform a normal installation using the free "trial" version and use your existing registration code to unlock it. http://www.nomadelectronics.com/PocketPC/PocketStars/PocketStarsDownload.htm
